According to FEMA, around 40 - 60% of small businesses never reopen their doors after facing a disaster. Even knowing that, most small businesses haven’t put in the time to create an emergency response plan so that they can minimize the impact of a disaster. SERVPRO will create a free Emergency Ready Profile for any business that wants one, but do you know how it can benefit your business?
You’ll know where to find the utility shutoffs. Depending on the size and nature of a disaster, it might be imperative that somebody immediately shuts off the gas, water, and/or electricity. Even if you personally know where the shutoffs are located, if you aren’t around at the time of a disaster, the role would fall on an available employee. SERVPRO’s Emergency Ready Profile marks all of the shutoff locations (and shows pictures), so your team can quickly do what’s needed.
You’ll have an immediate plan of action. The longer your business is inactive, the less likely you’ll recover. With our Emergency Ready Profile, you’ll not only have a guide for you and your employees, but you’ll also have instant access to your local SERVPRO professionals. The faster we’re there to clean up the damage, the quicker you’re able to reopen your doors.
You’ll have an incredible asset at no cost. In most cases, you would have to dedicate precious time and resources to create a quality emergency readiness plan, which is often a reason they’re never made. But SERVPRO’s franchises have the tools and skills to assemble an Emergency Ready Profile in a short amount of time. The only thing they need from you is a few minutes to go over some basic questions to get them started. If you’re wondering what the catch is, it’s just that if you ever do have a disaster, SERVPRO hopes you’ll call them for help!
If you’ve never thought about creating an emergency plan for your business, it’s time to start considering it. Because disaster rarely offers a warning, you don’t want to be caught off-guard when it strikes.

Cross Contamination is when bacteria is unintentionally transferred from once surface to another.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to be aware that cross contamination may be possible with the virus.
Touching Surfaces and Objects
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently came out with some news saying the virus "does not spread easily" from touching surfaces and objects. However, it is possible that objects can have the virus on it if someone sneezed or coughed on it.
As the CDC is still learning more about the virus, it is SERVPRO of Westminster's recommendation to wipe down any surfaces in public spaces. For example, it would be a good idea to wipe down door handles, buttons on elevators, stairway railings, and shopping cart handles.
Wash Your Hands!
Without a doubt, washing your hands is the best method to keep yourself safe from COVID-19. If there is no place to wash your hands, then using hand sanitizer is the second best option!

When the fires in Santa Barbara happened, SERVPRO of Westminster was quick to respond to all calls requesting for assistance. Read what one business owner's experience was with our team:
"I want to give a big old shoutout to Luis and his team! After the Thomas Fire, here in California, my interior design studio in Montecito had a lot of smoke and ash damage. I was beside myself as I had only been open 6 months when this happened. The idea of starting over was just too much to bear. Luis to the rescue!!! He and his team came in and cleaned every single fabric swatch, over 8000 of them!!! They ran air filters to rid the air of any signs of smoke and even did the windows. Thanks Luis and the rest of the team!!! My store has never looked better and I am eternally grateful for everything you did for me in just a few days! I have nothing but good things to say about Luis and my experience with SERVPRO. They get the job done and immaculately." - Blake W.

Some mold can also be identified by smell. In general, the smell of mold is unpleasant, and smells like something is moist in the room. Some people compare it to the smell of wet socks, or rotten wood or paper. When mold eats, grows and multiplies, it releases Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (MVOC). There are many of these compounds, or chemicals, that are released as mold grows, but some of the most common have smells that are pungent and musty. Their scent is also described as earthy or meaty, likened to the smell following rain. Others have an acetone, or camphor-like odor, with some described as herbaceous, nutty or fatty. Another MVOC releases an alcohol fermentation smell.
As you can see, mold can emit many different types of odor, just like it can come in many different colors and textures. So, how do you know if what you smell is indeed mold, instead of just regular smells in your home/business? For one thing, if aromatic mold is present, the smell will not fade no matter what you do to ventilate the room. Mold can grow inside wallpaper, walls, basements, ventilation ducts, under carpets and floorboards, so it is possible to smell mold without actually seeing it. Mold’s odor is persistent. It can even be a smell that you get used to.
Asbestos. The name has its origin in the Greek word for inextinguishable. A highly-effective and inexpensive fire-retardant material and thermal and acoustic insulator, asbestos was used extensively in home construction from the early 1940s through the 1970s. However, we now know that prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to lung disease. When disturbed, tiny abrasive asbestos fibers are easily inhaled, which damages lung tissue and can cause cancer. In homes built prior to 1975, asbestos is most commonly found as thermal insulation on basement boilers and pipes
Questions is, what in the world is asbestos?
Asbestos are mineral fibers that come from rocks and several mineral. They are often woven into fabrics that are used for insulating houses.
Are they dangerous?
Too much exposure to asbestos can cause serious damage to your health. Usually, the greater the chance of developing harmful health effects. But, disease symptoms may take many years to develop following exposure.
Epicenter of the earthquakes that occurred in California. Image by CNN
A few days ago, two earthquakes hit California, two days in a row. It wasn't a severe earthquake, but it is definitely important. Your business may be safe...for now.
An Earthquake Can Definitely Your Business
Since they are unavoidable, it is best to just recognize it. The smartest decision a business owner can do is to have insurance. If your earthquake were to destroy some of your business property, insurance will allow you to restore some of your items. As a business owner, it is best to have a safety/evacuation plan for yourself and employees. As a business owner in California, safety should be your number one concern.
Earthquakes Can Cause Fire and Water Damage
If this natural disaster were to affect your business by causing a fire or bursting a pipe, you can count on SERVPRO of Westminster to get the job done right!
Here are three easy and significant steps to take safety precaution in your business.
Step #1: Have An Evacuation Plan
Having an evacuation plan is an extremely important part of keeping yourself, as well as your employees safe. Make sure that every employee is aware of the evacuation plan. It is best to practice this fire drill at least once a month.
Step #2: Have Smoke Alarms
Having operating smoke alarms is a crucial way to alert people of smoke and a possible fire. The smoke alarms in your business should be tested at least once a month, and the batteries should be replaced twice a year.
Step #3: Obtain Several Fire Extinguishers
Having several fire extinguishers in your business will allow you to have a better chance of controlling a small fire. As a business owner, it is essential that every staff member is informed of where they are located. As well as training your employees how to use them, in case a fire breaks out.

A few of Westminster PD finest and SERVPRO of Westminster team posing for National Police Week breakfast.
Breakfast on us!
This week we joined many others across the nation in celebrating National Police Memorial Week with Westminster Police Department. It was such a privilege for SERVPRO Westminster staff to treat our local law enforcement during their week of recognition. With almost 100 breakfast burritos, 4 dozen donuts and gallons of coffee and juice, it was one of the most rewarding community appreciation events thus far. We truly enjoyed the tour of the facility and even more so meeting the many wonderful men and women of WPD; including Police Chief Ralph Ornelas. If you have not had the chance to meet him, he is best described in the words of Mayor Tri Ta “Chief Ornelas is very humble and honest.” * This statement is true and is recognizable in every interaction with Chief Ornelas. We look forward to hosting future community events for our law enforcement and adding National Police Memorial to our annual lists of events. Thank you all (past and present) who have served in law enforcement.
BONUS: Did you know National Police Week was initiated in 1962 by President Kennedy? However according to nleomf.org " President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police week."
