Living in California has its advantages and disadvantages. Although we have several regions in this beautiful state, we face the disadvantage of wildfires. As the climate starts changing and the heat begins to rise, our forests are at risk of catching fire. Learn how to prepare yourself and your family for this natural disaster.

Step 1: Preparing an emergency kit

An emergency kit should consist of several items such as:

  • food (canned, dried, energy bars)
  • water (two liters of water per person per day)
  • a manual can opener
  • a first aid kit
  • cash
  • copies of important family documents
  • battery powered flashlight
  • battery powered radio
  • extra batteries

Step 2: Remove fire hazards

Removing fire hazards from around your home, such as dried out branches, leaves, and debris is essential since these things can cause the fire to spread.

Step 3: Know your evacuation routes

Know your community’s local evacuation plan and identify several escape routes for your location in case roads are blocked.

Step 4: Stay informed

Monitor the weather reports provided by your local news radio and TV stations. It is always a good idea to keep a battery-powered radio with extra batteries to keep up with updates on the fire.
